Sambag caught up with Margaret Zhang as part of their Inspirational Women of 2014 Series.
What do you love most about what you do?
That I can bounce between being completely creative in the fashion sphere, and rigid structure through my studies. I meet the most incredible people through both worlds, and it keeps my mind open and hungry.
Why did you start in the industry?
I grew up heavily involved in visual and creative arts, and the boxed-in nature of secondary education just didn’t do it for me. I started Shine By Three as a creative outlet, and grew it to be an equal 50-50 split with my studies. Now I’m at a crossroads!
What advice would you give to your sixteen year old self?
Make vegan cheesecake with avocados! It’s the best. Also, Year 12 exams are not the end of the world, so stop crying!
Define your style…
A mixed bag of opposites - boyfriend slouch alongside razor sharp tailoring, monochrome and a corner of crazy pattern or texture.
Who is your style influencer?
I’m more inspired by history, music, art and stories than anything else - my ballet upbringing has had a huge impact on the way I look at photos, production, silhouettes and self expression.
Item you’ll never part with?
The film camera I learnt to shoot on. I don’t mind if I can’t share photos, but if I can’t capture them, I think I’d go a little loopy.
What is your favourite piece from the Sambag Autumn Winter collection and how would you wear it?
Billie Pony Brogue in leopard!
Margaret is wearing Sambag's Patrina Cotton Shirt, Lynda Leather Dress in Black and Billie Pony Brogue in Leopard.
