Autumn Has Arrived | Quarter Stylists

Our Quarter Stylist, Clare Ryan, talks through transeasonal pieces that will guide you through the Autumn months and keep you ahead of the fashion game.

And just like that, Autumn is at our doorstep. Hard to believe after the number of heatwaves we’ve been having in Perth, but don’t let the hot weather trick you; the cooler temperatures are on the horizon, leaving many of us wondering what to wear. This is when trans-seasonal pieces come into play. Those garments that are easy to throw on when the Summer nights turn cool, and provide that extra bit of warmth needed throughout the day.

Highly versatile clothing and accessories are a must have leading into Autumn.

I’m thinking lightweight jackets, cardigans, and boots. Let’s start with the easiest option, a jacket. Lightweight and oversized jackets offer versatility in styling, allowing you to easily layer over a variety of outfits. Unlike traditional blazers, which can feel formal and restrictive, oversized blazers provide a more relaxed and casual option that can effortlessly transition between different occasions. Seed’s Oversized Blazer is the perfect example of a trans seasonal jacket. The oversized style means you can wear it over a jumper, without it feeling too tight, and the longer length makes it perfect to throw over a dress. The shade of green is the perfect balance between Summer and Autumn – it’s nice to still embrace colour over the cooler months. If you’ve been on the hunt for an oversized blazer, then this is definitely an option to consider adding into your outfit rotation. A denim jacket is also a handy and versatile piece to have in your wardrobe.

The Stallone Jacket by Viktoria and Woods is a relaxed design that is timeless. Its shorter length and lightweight denim fabric makes it suitable for layering as well and is perfect for those who are more petite. The cropped length of the jacket adds a touch of casual chic to any ensemble, making it perfect for both daytime and evening. Whether paired with jeans for a double denim look or layered over a dress for a more feminine touch, a cropped denim jacket adds a laid-back, yet fashionable vibe to your outfit.

When you think of knitwear, do you only think of jumpers or cardigans? Well, I’m recommending knitted pants when the weather is temperamental. As you know the ‘matchy-matchy set’ was everywhere over Summer, and now it’s transitioning into Autumn, but in a knitted style. Morrison’s Raemi Pant, with matching Raemi Tunic, is the epitome of trans-seasonal comfort. The relaxed fit, ribbed stitch and Viscose blend yarn, makes it warm and comfortable.

Moving onto jumpers and cardigans. These are essential for mastering the art of layering during transitional seasons. Knitwear adds textural interest to your outfits, creating depth and dimension that elevates your trans seasonal looks. Whether it’s a chunky cable-knit jumper, a lightweight ribbed cardigan, or a cosy cashmere sweater, the tactile nature of knitwear adds visual appeal and tactile comfort to your ensemble.

One of my favourite tips for trans seasonal dressing is to replace your everyday t-shirt with a cardigan, like the organically grown cotton linen cardigan from Country Road. A cardigan like this in cream, is a wardrobe staple, as it easily teams with any colour pant or jacket. The relaxed fit and button-through front is elegant, ensuring that you look effortlessly chic and put-together, regardless of the season.

If a cardigan isn’t your vibe, then try for more of a statement piece, like Elka Collective’s Rohe Knit Vest in ecru. This crochet knit is modern in design and instantly adds texture and excitement to an outfit because of its unique cut.

Another option for a cardigan is opting for one that is in a ribbed fabric, check out Aje’s Duality seamless cardigan. The seamless fitted style makes it comfortable and the wide v-neck design with the logo detailing is a modern touch. It’s thin, lightweight and easily goes from a day at work to dinner with friends.

Dresses are also the perfect trans-seasonal wardrobe essential beause they’re super adaptable, as you can rock them in both warm and cool weather.  With the right dress, you’ve got endless layering options. You can add a jacket, cardigan, or vest over the top and you’re ready. When opting for a dress, think of it as a blank-canvas that you can add to; dress-up or dress down.

Saba’s Xanthe Twist Front Dress is a great example of a minimal design, that can be worn on its own or layered. The European textured rib fabric and midi-length hemline embraces the cooler weather, while the twisted front detail adds a hint of drama to the design.  Be sure to aim for a dress that is light and breathable for those sunny days, but not too flimsy that you freeze when the temperature drops.

If you prefer a shorter dress, like Bec and Bridge’s Ilora Knit Mini Dress, then play around with layers from head-to-toe, but adding thigh-high boots with a longer length jacket, or trench. A denim dress is also a great option, the heavier fabric will keep you warm on cooler nights. Aje’s Clay Denim Midi Dress is a flattering cut that fits at the waist and then flares out – the style caters to so many different body shapes.

It’s time to give your Summer sandals a break and embrace ballet flats, loafers or boots. For a more street-style vibe, try a gumboot style boot, like Country Road’s Spencer Gumboot. This boot works with pants, and adds edge to feminine dresses. Plus, they offer protection from rain and mud during the wetter months, while their breathable design keeps your feet cool and comfortable when temperatures rise. They’re easy to slip on and off (effortlessly), making them convenient for those days when the weather can’t make up its mind.

Taking centre stage this season is also the mesh style ballet flat. They’re so lightweight, it’s like you’re walking on air, but the style is sleek and modern. Hobb’s mesh ballet shoe with strap, is a new style that’s asking to be worn during these trans seasonal days and nights.
