Studio Pilates is on a mission to change the way the world works out, one class at a time.
How did Pilates start?
Joseph Pilates, the godfather of Pilates, was born in Germany in 1880 & dedicated his life to heath, fitness & wellbeing after overcoming a horrible childhood illness. He was one of the first figures to combine western and eastern ideas about health. He studied, practiced and documented every exercise pattern he could, from Roman & Greek regimes to body building & gymnastics as well as the eastern disciplines of tai chi, martial arts, yoga & meditation. His life mission was to make himself strong and healthy again in every aspect. By doing so, he laid the foundation for what we now know Pilates to be today.
When the first world war broke out, Joseph was living in England, so the British interned him as a German enemy alien. His time at the internment camp was spent around many wounded and bed bound soldiers. With his background in fitness and the want to help, he was able to intern as a nurse, giving him the ability to experiment & combine his learnings. He attached springs to the hospital beds to allow patients to engage in resistance exercise and rehabilitation without having to stand – and so, Reformer Pilates was born.
After the war, Joseph migrated to the USA and opened his own studio in the 1920s, naming his new system of exercise ‘Contrology’; a way of working out that provided mental and physical conditioning, encouraging one to develop their body to its maximum potential. ‘Contrology’ focused on the alignment of spine, the awareness of breath and abdominal strength with the understanding that extra added resistance from springs meant exercises were not only more effective at isolating specific muscle groups, but provided a low impact way to lengthen and strengthen the muscles.
After his passing in 1967, his exercise system which has already gained an impressive reputation from training high personalities, athletes and ballerinas, was redefined as the Pilates Method.
So why do Reformer Pilates?
Aside from the fact that it is an incredibly fun way to work out your entire body, Reformer Pilates is a low impact but high intensity workout which not only strengthens and tones your muscles, but aids to improve your posture, core strength, stability, stress management, concentration, flexibility, spinal alignment, weight loss, endurance, and mental health. It is a way of working out that requires you to be present and to be aware of your body.
Studio Pilates
Studio Pilates International in Claremont was the second Studio Pilates to open in Western Australia back in April 2021. They have built a supportive, fun and engaging community within the Studio and are home to luxury reformers which incorporate SP-TV technology and scientifically based choreography. This allows you to transform your body in the quickest time possible, with each exercise timed & sequenced in a super-efficient way, allowing you to get the most results in a convenient 40-minute class.
With 14 performers in the studio, they pride themselves on the ability to provide a level of personal training in a class based setting. The SP-TV technology allows the instructor to be more hands on during each exercise, providing the ability for each session to be customised specifically to the client’s needs.
They also offer Pre & Post natal Reformer workouts! These classes are specifically designed to work in line with the changes that are happening to the body and to support the body through the birth and recovery phases. Pregnancy classes are low impact and designed to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles and abdominal wall, reducing the chance of abdominal separation or prolapse post birth. They also help women reduce back pain and body strain as well as improve balance, gluteal muscle strength, breathing control, mental focus, relaxation, maintain a healthy weight and strengthen the legs, ultimately helping speed up the recovery postpartum.
